A Modest Proposal For Reconciling Double Murderer O.J. Simpson's Conviction for the 'Wrong Crime' with his Acquittal for his Real CrimesEverything old is new again, but this time with another Lewis Carrol twist.
Double Murderer Simpson's super-celebrity in the first trial got him
the ultimate 'Get Out of Jail Free' card, and the country collectively
came to terms with the fact that the guy who cut his wife's head off
beat the rap on an absurd technicality and was going to be out and
about playing golf forever.
We weren't happy about it, but resigned to the fact.
And now his murderous notoriety has placed him in the position of
facing life in prison on a bogus charge.
This new trial was obviously a show trial, to exact vengeance. Simpson
is no doubt a psychopath, but he has obviously been railroaded this
time around. The biggest difference between the two trials, is that in
the first instance, a jury deliberately spiked with a couple of
inverted racist, insane Simpson sycophants was complicit in allowing
him to thumb his nose at justice and The Man, but this time the
justice system itself allowed an obviously overcharged case, supported
by accusations from a discredited cast of cartoonish players all of
questionable repute to proceed. (Now, I am sure that the uber-arrogant
Simpson bears some blame. No doubt he turned down any plea bargains
offered, not realizing that his 'Get Out of Jail Free' card was only
designed to work once.)
My sense is that average Americans will be a little uneasy about
Simpson spending the rest of his life in jail for the 'wrong' crime.
Once again, we aren't going to be happy about it but we will be
resigned to the fact.
And an uneasiness will tug at us every now and then.
Now for my Modest Proposal to heal the collective subconscious
queasiness of the nation when it comes to matters Simpson:
Offer Simpson a sentencing plea bargain - No more than two years in
prison in exchange for a full confession of the Original Sin,
including production of the murder weapon or detailed explanation of
it's disposal, provision of graphic details of the crimes, provision
of any missing pieces of the forensic puzzle, and implication of all
abettors to the attempted cover up.
America would heave a collective sigh of relief. Dershowitz and the
rest of the Dream Team would have to get out their best ash cloth
outfits for an egg throwing parade down Main Street.Conspiracy
theorists and jury nullification participants would have to confront
themselves daily in the mirror, and even more people would spit at the
guy who used to jump over signs in airports right into our hearts each
time they saw him slinking around golf courses after he had served his
time.
The collective subconscious of the nation would finally be able
reconcile all matters Simpson and finally let go of them.
There you have it. Probably not as eloquent as Jonathan Swift's Modest
Proposal, but short and sweet.
